Huddersfield 1st XI 10 - 1 Slazengers 1st XI
Huddersfield secured their fifth win on the bounce with a stunning score line but at times a far from convincing performance. In fact Huddersfield found themselves one down to winless Slazengers having looked poor for the opening 20 minutes and creating very little. Thankfully this seemed to embarrass Huddersfield into some level of improvement with Courtney setting up Foo who then grabbed his second after good work from Durrans. It was soon 3-1 as Jimmy Swinden made light work of three defenders and the keeper and then another mazy run allowed him to slip in Hirst for a simple finish. 4-1 at half time but a less than satisfied feeling for the players got a reaction in the second half.
Slazenger’s rarely got out of their own half and six unanswered goals sent Huddersfield to the top of the league. Gregory smashed in a shot from a short corner and then Man of the match Jimmy Swinden set up Durrans for a goal before completing an excellent hat trick with two more of his own. A fantastic performance having a hand in 6 of the goals.
Mark Swinden, not to be left in the shadow of his brother surged out of the defence, produced a stunning run a smashed the ball home with a skillful reverse stick shot. Hirst had a shot saved by a defenders foot on the line but had the resulting penalty saved, although he did get his second and Huddersfield’s tenth in the dying minutes. There will be much tougher tests than this but still a good result that enhances Huddersfield’s record of scoring the most goals and conceding the least in the league.
Huddersfield knocked Sheffield Bankers off the top of the table for the first time since October and still have games in hand. 11 games down with 11 to go and Huddersfield are now in pole position having 7 of their remaining games against teams in the bottom half of the table. Next up are Halifax at home who inflicted one of only two Huddersfield defeats earlier this season.
